TANZANIA COUNTRY REPORT 1998 - 2000

Dr Julita Nawe
Tanzania Library Association

Introduction

Currently the Association has an interim Chairperson Dr Ally Mchavazo. This follows from the death of our substantive Chairperson, Mr Mohamed Hassan Mhina in 1999. We also sadly report the death of other two members, namely Ms. E.V Chiduo (1998) and Prof. John M. Newa (1999).

Activities

The Tanzania Library Association (TLA) participated actively in several activities.

  • The National Book Week which has been organized on an annual basis.
  • TLA has also been instrumental in the formation of the National Book Development Council in Tanzania.
  • A copyright law was enacted recently.
  • It has also conducted a number of short courses on ICT e.g. CDS/ISIS
  • It has participated and provided advisory services to long-term training programmes being conducted in the country.
  • Internet connectivity is increasing, whereby the National Central Library and Arusha Regional Library are now connected.
  • More professionals have gone for further training in the field at various levels.

Constraints

  • Membership is still very low
  • Membership is scattered all over the country thus rendering holding of meetings difficult.
  • TLA has no fixed premises, thus rendering communication difficult.
