GENERAL INFORMATION FOR TRAVELBotswanaCentrally located in the Southern Africa region, shares boarders with Zambia, Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The entire country is 581 730 square kilometers in area and its capital city is Gaborone. ClimateBotswana is semi –arid to arid with the daily maximum temperature at 33 degrees C-40 degrees in summer from September to April and 22 degrees C -30degrees C in winter from May to August. The average minimum temperature is about 19 degrees C in summer and 5 degrees C in winter. What to Bring
Passport & Visa RequirementsAll visitors entering Botswana must hold a passport that is valid for at least six months, except those with United Nations Convention travel documents. Visitors must also have outgoing travel documents and sufficient funds to finance their stay. Citizens of most SADC and Commonwealth countries do not require a visa prior to arrival in Botswana. Note: Cross Border Charges payable as you enter the Country CurrencyBotswana's unit of currency is the Pula (P), which is divided into 100 Thebe (t). The word 'Pula' means rain and 'thebe' means shield. The shield appears on the national coat of arms. Bank notes come in denominations of P10, 20, 50 and 100, 200 and coins in denominations of 5t, 10t, 25t, 50t, P1, P2 and P5. Major credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Diners Club, are accepted widely. Most hotels and lodges accept foreign currency . There are also Exchange bureaus at major border posts. Credit card cash advances are available in major cities through Barclays Bank or Standard Chartered Bank. Cash transfers are easiest through Western Union money transfer. Please note that credit card cash is also available at First National Bank. Botswana abolished exchange controls in February 1999. Foreign exchange transactions forms must be completed, as the Bank of Botswana requires a record of the amount of currency in circulation. The most convertible currencies are the South African Rand, the Euro, the British Pound and the US Dollar. Banks open at 9:00 AM and close at 3:30 PM during weekdays and from 8:15 AM to 10:45 AM on Saturdays. While cash of any amount is no longer restricted, any person entering or leaving Botswana is required to declare Pula and/or foreign currency bank notes in their possession if the amount is equal to or exceeds an equivalent of P10,000.00 (ten thousand Pula). A family unit must declare any amount carried by each member if the aggregate in the possession of the family is P10,000.00 or more. There is a well established network of automatic teller machines in major towns and villages for cash withdrawals using major international credit cards and debit cards.
